Here’s a closer look at the handy new camping and foraging tool from Baugo Blades of Indiana. Before you read any further and in the interest of fair and full disclosure, you should know that this review of the Forager’s Camp Knife will be very biased since this knife is designed by and exclusively marketed by our family!

Forager's Camp Knife Blank

This knife started out as an idea to bridge the size and price gap between the machete-sized bush knives and the full sized survival knives. It was conceived on the day that I discovered rust on the blade of one of my favorite non-stainless-steel knives that I regularly carry for camp chores and foraging outings.

Forager's Camp Knife Cord Wrap HandleThe Forager’s Camp Knife starts out as a blank cut from 9Cr14 steel, which is a better than average grade of 440C Stainless Steel. It’s then ground and hardened, to our specs, at a state-of the-art facility overseas. We knew that our own machine shop would not be able to manufacture these blades economically so we chose to use an established Chinese manufacturing plant that had the capabilities to manufacture the blade to our exact specifications. This brings the price of this tool down low enough so you don’t have to strain the budget to buy it.

The rust resistant, black oxide coated blade is ground in a way that allows the user to perform tasks that clip-point knives and most drop-point knives couldn’t perform without possibly damaging the edge or the tip. The beefy full-tang handle carries the knife’s strength from tip to pommel and the 12.5″ overall length makes it possible to comfortably carry in a belt sheath which is difficult to do with the machete-sized survival tools that I own.

The buyer can order this knife as a blade only or choose to have one of our “shop elves” lace approximately 6 feet of 550 cord around and through the handle using the long slot and lanyard hole. If these blades go into a second production we will most likely offer precut wood grips harvested and cut from our own Indiana hardwood trees.

Two sheaths are currently available…. a Nylon MOLLE sheath and a Custom Kydex dangler sheath.

The Nylon MOLLE sheath is manufactured by Ontario Knife Co. We modify them in our shop to accept the extra width of Forager’s Camp Knife. It’s an excellent sheath that features a hard plastic insert, leg-tie, snap retention and a full length MOLLE attachment strap.

The Custom Kydex sheath is hand-made in our shop. The design remains the same from sheath-to-sheath but no two of our kydex sheaths are exactly alike. We use actual Kydex material with a minimum thickness of .070″ and add an adjustable belt loop made from 1.5″ black nylon webbing. It’s mainly to be used as a vertical sheath for your belt or pack but the 1/4″ eyelets along the length of this sheath allow the user to develop their own way of carrying.

After a very successful pre-order campaign we were able to contract a large, but limited, supply of these blades. As of today, October 12th, 2015, they are in stock and ready to ship. Many customers have already received their Forager’s Camp Knife and provided some very good feedback and reviews.
